I’m particular about coffee. I home roast. This is a great way to make a great cup of coffee. Featured in the September & October 2009 issue of Cooks Illustrated (check it out for detailed instructions), this method allows you to add just the perfect temp water, customized amount of water and beans, as it drips into your cup. This filter is easy to clean by hand, but I also clean it in the dishwasher sometimes. I don’t like the way it’s too small to perch on top of giant coffee mugs. But I just use a traditional size cup/mug and it works fine. Like other reviewers, I use #4 filters because the larger size allows me more room to pour and stir the grinds. It is important to stir the grinds in the filter with the water in order for them to be saturated and give you a fuller taste.

You will not get decent coffee from this product unless you pour the water SLOWLY over the grounds. If you are willing to be patient, this works fine.

I purchased this for my RV so DH and I would have an easy way to make coffee on travel days and while boondocking. It makes a vey good cup of joe when paired with the Medelco #2 Cone Permanent Coffee Filter. This filter fits the Melitta perfectly and does not leave an off taste as the paper filters do.

I got rid of the French press after purchasing this item. It is easier to clean and takes up less space.

The only other coffee maker that I use is a Toddy Cold Brew System. This Makes a fabulous cup of coffee by just adding hot water. It produces the best coffee I have ever drank. I just store the decanter inside the fridge in one of the door shelves.

Easy and makes a great cup of coffee

I have a white plastic Melitta cone filter for #102 Melitta coffee filters. In essence it is similar to the one advertised here except for the fact that it is an ‘old style’ version where you can’t see the coffee drip into the cup. This is not a problem for me because I always only boil the amount of water I actually need for the cup that I am going to use to brew my coffee.

In my opinion, this is the single best coffee-related invention ever. It is so cheap that it is almost free. It lasts ages and most important, it gives you that classic, tasty cup of coffee. Sadly, with the rise of automated single-cup coffee machines like the Nespresso, a good cup of drip coffee is ever harder to find these days. Luckily, the Melitta company is still out there making these simple but efficient filter cones. Highly recommend!

not perfect, but good bang for the buck

The bottom of the cone is a little warped where it sits on the cup, so it rocks back and forth slightly. I ran it through the dishwasher before using it (top rack, air dry setting), so the dishwasher may have warped the plastic. Says it’s dishwasher safe, but it is very easy to hand wash — so that’s probably a better idea.

I use a 12 oz coffee mug so I have to fill the grounds with water twice to get a full mug (takes about 2 mins total). I stir the grounds with a chopstick so they don’t cling to the top of the paper filter. Works OK with coarse or fine ground coffee. If you use boiling water the coffee will be very strong, so beware if you have sensitive teeth.

This system is much less tedious than a french press, resulting coffee is strong but not chalky.

    Simple is Better…

I normally drink 1 cup of coffee at a time. This device works oustanding and makes a much stronger and richer cup of coffee compared to a drip coffee maker. I use 200 Degree water straight from a tea kettle.

I also have a Bunn 10-Cup coffee maker and I much prefer the way this device brews over the Bunn. Clean up is easy and its small enough to fit in a kitchen drawer.

Only drawback is its really designed for 1 cup of coffee at a time so if you have company your going to need a drip coffee maker or French Press.

I used to have an old one of these and this one has a window on it so you can see the coffee actually dripping into the mug and get a good idea of if your mug is almost full which is a great improvement over the previous design.

    Coffee filter holder
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
It’s okay. It holds the coffee filter in place over a cup so I can make just one cup of drip coffee. But because of the way it is made, it won’t work with narrow cups, and that means that I can’t use it on all my mugs. So I am only giving it three out of five stars because of what I see as a design error. Other than that, it works just fine.

    Works as Described
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Product works are described. Purchased this item after company eliminated free coffee benefit at work … needed a substitute in place of the $2.00 for a plain cup of coffee charged at a nearby shop. Use is straightfoward and not overly messy to perform at my desk. Quality is similar to that of my automatic drip coffee maker at home. Thus, it gives me a decent cup of coffee at a reasonable cost.
